WHO WE ARE

characteristic virtues

Among the virtues of Mary put before me for imitation, there are four which should particularly engage my attention. For almost one century and a half, the Association has unceasingly recommended them to all the generations of Children of Mary who have preceded me. How many souls have thus been sanctified! I too, I wish to follow in their footsteps - to fix my eyes on the Immaculate Virgin, to listen to her, to imitate her.

PURITY

     Let us look at Mary...

God in whom are infinite riches, could not find a more precious gift to offer the Blessed Virgin when he chose her to be the Mother of His Son than to when exempt her from original sin. "Thou art all fair, and there is not a spot in thee!"

Honors, fortune, pleasures are nothing in the eyes of God compared with the treasure of purity.

This privilege is so dear Blessed Virgin that I her Child must love the virtue of purity in a special way. Purity of heart, of body and soul, will be the object of my care and vigilance.

      Let us listen to Mary...

She spoke to her two Seers of the nineteenth century, to both, she revealed something about her incomparable privilege.

To Saint Catherine Laboure, she taught the short prayer, engraved on the Miraculous Medal, which was to spread throughout the world: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to theel"

To Saint Bernadette, who asked for her name. she replied with indefinable tenderness, "I am the Immaculate Conception."

"Blessed are the pure of heart," Mary repeats to me after Jesus. The pure of heart she expects to find, first of all, among her privilege children.

The pure of heart see God even on this world, their faith is more intense.

The pure of heart have a sense to God's views, serve Him joyfully and promptly and are more disposed to understand their neighbor and share in his troubles.

The pure of heart will have a clearer and more profound vision of God in heaven; they will enjoy God's most intimate communications. The pure of heart are those of whom it is written: "They will follow the Lamb wherever he goes."

       Let us imitate Mary...

Souls who constantly gaze upon Mary have a special relish for purity. The more they avoid voluntary sin, so much the more do they and rightly so feel capable of exercising a good influence on others and of becoming truly apostolic.

But the atmosphere in which I live is apposed to my ideal of purity: the conversations I hear, the examples I see, the pleasure that tempt me, the fashion that attracts me, occasions of all sort which come my way and so many obstacles that I know well.

Three enemies of the virtue of purity wage incessant war against me: the devil, impure par excellence; the world, with all its temptations suggested by the devil; myself, whom am, by nature inclined to evil

I should not ignore that in order to remain pure, cost what it may, I must take precise and serious measures, resolutions to be frequently renewed. These measures are in particularly:

  • to guard my senses especially those of sight and touch

  • to avoid idleness, which occasion useless and dangerous musings

  • to keep away from harmful pleasures, (joining at questionable dances, bad films, unbecoming fashions, objectionable plays, dangerous conversations, and literature, etc.)

  • to frequent the Sacraments: Penance helps greatly in preserving purity; the Eucharist gives me Him who is purity itself

  • to have daily recourse to the Blessed Virgin with filial confidence.

O Immaculate Mother of mine, I have given thee my heart, keep it well.  I feel that in my inner life, the most serious questions are those which lie in my heart, I am at peace when my heart is pure, I am joyful if my heart is in perfect order.

Help me to keep this heart in the fragile vase which contains it...

I know that there will be temptations, many temptations perhaps; to be tempted however, is not yield. My Mother, extend thy hand to me that I may not fall along my difficult way of which thou knowest all the thorns and stones, all the paths and windings.

Mary conceived without sin, pray for thy child!

humility

     Let us look of Mary...

"Thy Holy Spirit" says St. Bernard, would not have descended upon the Virgin of Nazareth however pure, had she not been humble.

In fact, Mary was raised to the sublime dignity of Mother of God, because she was the humblest of all creatures; She loved the hidden obscure life of the temple since her earliest years. She shared in the humiliations of Jesus at Bethlehem. She lived in Nazareth unnoticed, like the most ordinary women during her time. When a voice raised from the crowd to bless "her who bore the Savior", one would say that Jesus Himself by his answer, wished to keep His Mother in the most profound humility placing her in the simple rank of "those who hear the word of God, and keep it."

For, Mary, this was not offense, it was the execution of God's plans over her - that was enough! She will remain always and to everyone "the humble Virgin Mary."

     Let us listen to Mary...

"Quia respexit humilitatem ancillae suae" - thus she sing in the Magnificat. She proclaim that God has regarded the lowliness, the humility His handmaid, rather her virginity. It was humility that made her virginity pleasing to the Most High, which crowned her, the humble Virgin, with the dignity of Mother of God.

     Let us imitate Mary...

My little "Child of Mary" obliges me to make great efforts to practice this virtue which the world hardly understand.

Does not everything incline me to boast of my qualities and natural talents? To develop my personality, to seek honors and praise, the first place always?

The doctrines of the world are completely opposed to the teachings of my heavenly Mother when she speaks to me of humility. And yet, what is humility after all, but truth?

My body is only a lump of clay which will soon change into dust. A few moments of meditation suffice to make me understand the folly and stupidity of those who glory in physical and material goods.

And when I consider my soul and the innumerable sins with which I have stained it, the daily falls after so many resolutions, can I find any motive for pride?

I shall often look upon Jesus humiliated and despised, on Jesus of the Passion, just as the Blessed Virgin had contemplated Him.  I shall also look at the Tabernacle, so disproportioned with Him who dwell therein for love of us.

And I shall resolve to practice humility better:

     Interiorly....

  • by willingly submitting my judgement to that of others

  • by never considering myself better than others

  • by accepting the fact that other know my defects.

     Exteriorly...

  • by avoiding self praise or vaunting the little good I do

  • by concealing even the little good I may chance to do or at least doing it quietly, under the eyes of God alone

  • by accepting the small humiliations, deserved or not, that I meet on my deserved or not, that I meet on my way.

This virtue may seem very hard to practice - nothing of the sort! It gives us true peace of heart for Jesus has promised "Learn of Me, for I am meek and humble of heart and you will find rest for your souls."

Humility brings joy; humble hearts know no sadness or melancholy. It gives us an assurance of heaven. Lastly, it makes apostolic work fruitful. How could God resist a humble soul who trust in Him alone! God makes such a soul His instrument, knowing well that the glory of all the good it does, will be rightly proffered to Him.

O my Immaculate Mother, help me under better the virtue of humility, Thou who has well practiced it.

I know that I am nothing - that I can do nothing, that I am worthless and have so often offended God. Since humility is not of my nature, I therefore place myself under Thy direction: Thou help me, Mother!

OBEDIENCE

      Let us look at Mary...

No creature has been so pure or so humble Mary, no one also practiced obedience as she did She valued this virtue so highly that even at a tender age she was not content to obey her parent only, but also willingly submitted herself to those in charge of directing the young maidens in the Temple of Jerusalem.

Later, her obedience to the orders of the Mast High made her the Mother of God. This same virtue urged her to make the weary journey to Bethlehem. Mary submitted without a word of complaint to the orders of Augustus and she accepted without murmuring the refusal of the innkeepers who closed their doors to her.

She submitted herself to the choice of an abandoned stable wherein to give to the world her Son.

Mary obeyed the order, which Joseph transmitted to her, on going into exile to an unknown country, without resources and without friends.

     Always, everywhere Mary obeyed...

     Let us listen to Mary...

She spoke so little that the Gospels could record out a few words of this Virgin who "kept all things in her heart."" The words she did speak, however, bear like a seal, the marks of obedience: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord." She replied to the angel who brought the message of the Annunciation, and added her "Fiat" - which is, after that of Jesus, the most perfect act of obedience that has ever been made of this earth.

At the marriage feast of Cana, if she gave counsel to the servants, it was to urge them to obedience - "Do whatever He tells you."

     Let us imitate to Mary...

Around me everything tells of liberty and independence, I myself am so proud, with a subtle pride that makes me love above all things to have my own way. I thus meet difficulties in imitating Mary on this point.

Yet, supernatural obedience, far from being a heavy yoke, offers me nothing but advantages.

It renders meritorious for eternal life the most common and ordinary actions, like eating, sleeping, working.

It brings serenity of mind and per conscience since it does away with all restlessness, with all indecision, with all anguish which afflicts the souls enlavished to their whims and their fickleness.

     Whom should I obey...

All those who have authority over me, representatives of God. My spirit of faith should be able to listen to the authority which resides in my superiors, that is: my parents, my spiritual director, my employers, the priest of the parish, the Bishop of the diocese...

     How should I obey...

Like Jesus and Mary; the first words uttered by the Son of God in coming into this world were "Father, behold I come to do Thy Will," and for this Will, He went even into death, and death on the Cross.

Mary imitated this Divine Model perfectly. My obedience therefore should be:

  • Supernatural: It is God Who commands me, Who makes known to me His Will

  • Universal: Extending to everything I am commanded to do.

  • Prompt and Cheerful: God wants to be served joyfully

One practical means to acquire this virtue is to follow exactly the Rule of Life which I will submit to the judgement of my director and so gain the merit of obedience.

O Immaculate Virgin, Thou whose life was a perfect act of obedience, teach me this virtue, so contrary to my willful nature.

Make me understand that true liberty is that which comes from docility, urged on by love and by thy example.

O Mary conceived without sin, pray for thy child!

CHARITY

     Let us look at Mary...

First of all, in the mystery of the Visitation all fraught with Mary's exquisite charity. She hastens to her cousin Elizabeth without being called. She does not hesitate to make a long and tiresome journey in order to render her services.

At Bethlehem in the poor stable where she received the first adorers of Jesus, the Gospel speaks-only of shepherds and Magi, but reading between the lines of the holy book, we can surmise that besides these shepherds and kings, there surely came a stream of the curious from Bethlehem.

Surely, the Virgin welcomed all these visitors graciously for all she has was a smile and a few words.

At Nazareth, Mary came in contact with many people. She loved to help them and to bear with them patiently. She was obliging and charitable to the unfortunate, the afflicted, and to the little ones. Even though absorbed in completion of her Jesus, she thought of others, "of the dear neighbor", whom her Son taught her, the first of all, to love as herself.

It was at the wedding feast of Cana, that Mary's kindness was revealed with the most exquisite refinement in a very special way. She wished to  spare the newlyweds a humiliation that would cause them pain. She was entirely aware of the situation which was for her important because it involved an act of charity.

     Let us listen to Mary...

She spoke at Cana because there was a charitable deed to be done. Sweetly she whispered in the ear of Jesus "They have no more wine." Does she not know full well His goodness and omnipotence?

     Let us imitate Mary...

Jesus came to earth to teach the law of love, the law of charity. "This is my command", He said, and He taught it first of all to His mother.

No one understood nor realized the testament of the Master than Mary; no one ever practiced charity with greater perfection, with greater tenderness, or to a greater extent than Mary did.

It is therefore an obligation for a Child of Mary to make this divine charity pervade her whole life. It calls to me in many form, and at almost every moment of the day. I will practice it:

     In my mind...

  • avoiding rash or severe judgements

  • by driving away uncharitable thought

     In my heart...

  • how much touchiness, how much antipathy and wounded self love. I find in myself too sensitive, too self centered heart, so full of self esteem!

     In my will...

  • are there not petty grudges or paltry desires of revenge that turn my will away from the wide of road of Christian charity?

     In my words...

  • I will watch especially over my tongue, this two-edged sword which can do so much good as well as so much evil. Harsh words, mockeries, slanders and calumnies are apposed to charity and often becomes grave faults.

     In my relation to others...

  • the occasions are many; to lend a helping hand, to say a kind word, to yield place to another, to take pity on one suffering, to share in a joy or a sorrow, perhaps just to smile... Charity also presupposes the pardon and forgetting of ill treatment.

Jesus prayed for His executioners he cast a long look of love on Peter, who denied Him. He called Judas "my friend..."

Mary forgot the indifference, the refusal the harsh words of the people of Bethlehem.

What a contrast to my own conduct! I will try to the association of the "Luisa", by taking greater lead a life of active charity by joining, for example interest in the sick and poor.

Thus shall I fulfill one of the desires most dear to the Sacred Heart of Jesus who has said "Whatever you do to the least of my brethren, you do it unto me."

O my Immaculate Mother, whose heart was all filled with divine charity, form in me a kind and profoundly generous heart.

Where there is strife, help me to be an instrument of peace; where there is suffering, teach me to bring consolation; where there is discouragement, put into my mouth words of hope; where there is hatred, let me bring a little love.

O Mary conceived without sin, make the charity of Jesus Christ reign in me in all its fullness.
